MSF runs three medical clinics in the poor neighbourhoods of Zahedan, a city located near the Pakistan and Afghan border. Most of the refugees arrived in Iran in the early 80's, fleeing the war broke out in Afghanistan with the invasion of ex Soviet Union.

There are about two million Afghan refugees living in Iran, 500.000 of them are in Sistan-Balucistan, one third of 600.000 inhabitants in Zahedan are supposed to be of Afghan origin.
