After the outbreak of the war, the Russians took over the city for two weeks, the 80% of the population was forced to flee, the Russians shelled the city and its district too.

These are now occupied by around 7,000 refugees. Pensions amount to about 12 lari (6 euros) per month, which means they are living below the minimum poverty level.
